Vinewise Viticulture specialises in organic and biodynamic vineyard management across the entire Central Otago winegrowing region. With new industry guidelines requiring that New Zealand vineyards be certified sustainable, Vinewise is taking the extra step by advocating organic and biodynamic conversion. Forget the marketing value – it’s an ethos and a way of life for everyone at Vinewise.

Based in Cromwell, the modest team of experienced, dedicated staff work throughout the subregions of Gibbston Valley, Bannockburn, Lowburn, Pisa, Wanaka and Bendigo. Viticulturists Grant Rolston and Gary Ford head Vinewise, with both men actively involved in all vineyard operations. They are supported by a small, select number of block managers that have an intimate knowledge of their respective vineyards.

Grant Rolston

Leaving behind an extensive background in agriculture and horticulture, Grant began his viticulture career near Alexandra in 1999. The millennium year realized an opportunity to work in Bannockburn, initially at Bald Hills and later at Carrick, quickly moving through the ranks to become their viticulturist. Seeking new challenges, Grant established his own business in 2003. Initially specializing in sustainable vineyard management, then progressing to organic and biodynamic viticulture.

With more than a decade of harvests Grant has amassed a wealth of local knowledge and experience across a wide range of Central Otago vineyards. He has also traveled through European vineyards, bringing home some Old World knowledge to apply right here in Central Otago.

Grant also found time to complete a Certificate in Wine Production and when he’s not spending time with his family, he enjoys a round of golf or some deep sea fishing.

Gary Ford

With a Bachelor degree in Commerce (Horticulture), Gary spent a decade working in agriculture and horticulture before moving to Wanaka.

Having spent time in nurseries working with grapevines, he was keen to know more and after completing the Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University he quickly paired up with Grant at Vinewise.

Gary has a strong interest in organics and when he’s not traipsing through the vineyard he’s likely to be skiing, fishing or hunting.
